Mom to Mom Newsletter

Sharing real life motherhood moments, life-saving products, and tips/tricks from one mom to another.

Hey Reader,

This week, I want to talk about the inevitable motherhood mental load that comes with the title. The mental load refers to the constant, often unacknowledged responsibilities that mothers carry, including keeping track of everyone's schedules, meal planning, organizing activities, school work, doctor visits, self-care, and managing household chores.

Have something else to add on the list?

This mental load can take a serious toll on a mother's well-being, I know i can think back to moments where it weighed down on my own shoulders. Thus, leading to stress, overwhelm, and the inevitable...burnout.

What adds to the mental load many moms carry? Well, by default — these tasks tend to typically fall right into mom's lap. It's a societal, deep rooted way of thinking that hasn't been broken. It's also a mirrored issue of being unable to separate ourselves from the perfectionist mindset where we feel like we MUST be able to do all the things, all the time.

If you've been struggling with this lately, I have a few tips to help you manage the mental load of motherhood on your shoulders:

  1. Communicate with your partner/Ask for help: Share the responsibilities and discuss ways to divide the day to day & household tasks equally. If your partner works odd or long hours, be sure to voice your need for additional help so you can come up with a plan to get the support you need.
  2. Prioritize & practice self-care: It is so important to take time for yourself to recharge and prioritize your overall health. Health includes mental & physical. Here are some ideas: going to therapy, intentional journaling, listening to music, going to sleep early, exercising, etc...
  3. Get control of your routine: I often find that the more unorganized I am with my day, the more cluttered and overwhelming it feels. I encourage you to find ways to streamline your daily tasks. If you have young children, Iike I do, you can invite them into this process by using visual routine lists for them too!
  4. Seek out support & build your village: Sometimes, we simply need a friend who gets it. Try joining a community of like-minded mothers online, I've made some of my closest mom friends through online groups! And if you absolutely feel like you're struggling, seek out professional support. PSI has a wealth of resources and a local directory to help you find expert support.

Let's make one deal, let's work together to support and uplift all the amazing mothers out there, like yourself, k?

I promise, weathering the storms aren't always easy, but you can get through.
